Does Passionflower Help Sleep? Study on 110 Patients Gives Answer

Passiflora, commonly known as passionflower, has traditionally been used as a calming and sedative agent. Researchers conducted a study on 110 patients with clinical insomnia to test whether passiflora can truly help people sleep.

Patients received either Passionflower extract or a placebo for 2 weeks. They kept sleep diaries and were subject to a number of sleep study instruments, such as the Insomnia Severity Index and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index.

The results:

  • Total sleep time (TST) was significantly increased in the Passionflower group compared with placebo.

  • Sleep efficiency and wake after sleep onset (WASO) significantly improved after 2 weeks in the Passionflower group.

  • The study demonstrated the positive effects of Passionflower on objective sleep parameters including TST on polysomnography in adults with insomnia disorder.

Where Can I Get Passiflora to Help Me Sleep?

Passiflora can be bought commercially on its own, in teas, or in sleep supplements. If you're looking for a tea with passiflora, make sure you choose uncaffeinated or decaf as caffeine can keep you awake. If you prefer something stronger than tea, try a sleep gummy that combines it with other sleep agents such as Nature's Sleep Gummies. Nature's Sleep Gummies contain a combination of passiflora, melatonin and Vitamin B6, which work together synergistically to improve sleep quality, length, and the time it takes you to fall asleep.
